My paternal grandmother uses this kind of sewing machine to make pillow cases and blankets. Her old singer sewing machine is in fact in good working condition when she died 2 years ago. I wonder though who got hold of her sewing machine. My grandmother used to tell me her American employer (she used to work as a cook for some Americans in Manila during the war) gave her the sewing machine and she was able to bring it along with her when they migrated here in Mindanao.
With her sewing machine, I just choose some cloth that I like and ask her to make pillow cases for me. There are also instances when my US based aunt would be sending huge blankets and inay, my grandmother, would be cutting them into pieces and sew them into several blankets. As the favorite grand daughter (wink), I always have my own “cut”.
I never actually realized how costly blankets and pillowcases are until my grandmother died. I have been buying ready-made beddings these days and ugh! these pillowcases and blankets really drain my pockets.
